Ustazah : How are you sister?
الحدالله :Sister
I am fine.
Ustazah : My question to you when did you start hifz al Qur’an and what was your age?
Sister : I started hifz al Qur’an with a guidance of a sanad teacher in April 2021 and I was 64 years old then.
Ustazah : What time you choose for memorising?
Sister : I usually memorise after fajr prayer.
Ustazah :What motivates you to memorise quran?
Sister : These are some motivations from Rasulullah that motivates me to memorise al Qur’an.
i) Attaining the Glory of Heaven
“(For them are) gardens of perpetual residence which they will enter. They will adorned therin with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their garments therein will be silk.” (Al Fathir : 33)
ii) Be the Best Survant
خيركم من تعلم القران وعلمه
“The best among you are those who study the Qur’an and teach it.”
(رواه لبخاري)
iii) The Presence of an Overflow Reward
من فرأ حرفا من كتاب الله فله به حسنة والحسنة بعشر أمثالها لا أقول الم حرف ولكن ألف حرف ولام حرف وميم حرف (رواه الترمذى)
‘Whoever (Muslims) read one letter from the book of Allah, then for him is one good, while one good is ten times as much. I did not say Alif Lam Mim one letter, but Alif one letter, Lam one letter and Mim one letter.”
Ustazah : Does the age prevent the one for memorising Qur’an?
Sister : Age does not prevent any body in memorising the Qur’an. There are companions of our Prophet, who started memorising the Qur’an at the age of 50 years or more.
Ustazah : What is your way for memorising?
Sister : Divide the time for memorising into three main categories: 1. Al hifdz (الحفظ), time to memorise which is generally done after the fajr prayer or before fajr prayer, after tahajjud. I take at least 30 minutes, 10 minutes for listening and 20 minutes for memorising (by repetition). Before going to sleep, spend another 30 minutes to revise memorization of the day and write the verses.
- Murajaah (مراجعة), time to repeat memorization, in each of the sunnah prayer.
- Mudzakarah(مذاكرة), time to remember. This time is very flexible depending on the amount of activity. It can be done while walking, sitting or lying down.
Ustazah : What is your advice to others about memorising Al Qur’an?
Sister : Memorise sincerely, seriously, be patient anf beleive in Allah’s promises.
Sincere – Al Bayyinah :5
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, (being ) sincere to Him in religion….”
Serious – Al Qiyamah : 16 – 18
“Move not your tongue with it, (O Muhammad), to hasten the recitation of the Qur’an.”
“Indeed, upon Us is its collection (in your heart) and (to make possible) its recitation.”
“So when We have recited it ( through Gabriel), then follow its recitation.”
Be Patient – Al Ra’d : 23 – 24
“Gardens of perpetual residence, they will enter them with whoever is righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate (saying) “Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.”
Believe in Allah’s Promises- Al Qamar : 17. 22, 32 and 40
“And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any, who will remember?”
Choose a sanad teacher to guide the memorization process. You cannot memorise it yourself as the nature of the Qur’an goes hand in hand with teaching. Be patient in learning and keep good manners towards the teacher as it is important for the presence of the blessings of knowledge and practices.
Choose a strategic place that facilitates the memorization process, that is, a quiet place and facilitates focus.
Istiqamah. Istiqamah is one the factors that strengthen memorization. Little but consistent is better than much but irregular. The Prophet’s advice to Sayyidah Aisyah :
أحب الأعمال إلى الله تعالى أدو مها وان قل (رواه مسلم)
“The deeds that Allah loves the most are those that are consistent even if they are few.”
Make memorization of priority above others as it will make us more enthusiastic and Al Qur’an will be easily embedded in our heart. انشاءالله
والله أعلم
